Donnie's enlistment into the U.S. Army commenced on Oct 20, 1969, when he was just 17 years old. Because he was underage, his mother signed the papers for him to enlist. Donnie attended basic combat training at Fort Lewis, Washington, and advanced individual training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He also received airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia.
